Our research team is at Turku PET Centre (https:\/\/turkupetcentre.fi<\/a>) at the University of Turku, Finland, and we are also one of the research groups in the Finnish InFLAMES Research Flagship (https:\/\/inflames.utu.fi<\/a>) in immunology and new drug development. We focus on development of new radiopharmaceuticals for clinical PET imaging of immunological diseases and cancer, in particular brain tumors. Our key methodology is to use positron emission tomography (PET) techniques to investigate disease mechanisms, and develop new agents for diagnosis and treatment targeting the discovered mechanisms. As an example, we study monocarboxylate transporters in the brain to understand how the nervous system contributes in brain tumor initiation, progression, and treatment resistance, and how brain tumors cause neurological implications. Our study is performed mainly in mice. Histology, tissue immunostaining and cell study are essential part in our research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of our strengths is that we are able to create novel radiolabeled molecules as probes to see invisible, and to precisely quantify pharmacokinetics and tissue uptake in the whole body with a single PET scan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our team members come from multi-disciplinary study and research backgrounds including chemistry, pharmacy, biochemistry, biology and medicine. In addition to basic research, we actively collaborate with clinicians in the clinical translation studies of new radiopharmaceuticals, and collaborate with industry and provide research services to pharmaceutical companies.
